The 7 Conditions for Non-Positional Relating

1. Mutual Recognition of Oneness

Both coach and client recognize and respect that at the deepest level, there is no fundamental separation between them; both are expressions of the same underlying reality. This awareness is rooted in the coach’s mature and stable realization of their own nondual nature, authentically engaging in non-positional relating.

2. Presence and Mindfulness

Continuous present-moment awareness by both parties ensures that interactions are grounded in the here and now, avoiding conventional patterns of authority or superiority. Mindfulness in communication includes being aware of language that reinforces separation or hierarchy.

3. Equal Partnership

The relationship is viewed as a partnership where both coach and client are on an equal footing, exploring and discovering together rather than a hierarchical teacher-student dynamic. This encourages a shared journey of understanding and discovery, avoiding one-directional advice.

4. Openness and Authenticity

Both parties strive to interact authentically, without roles or masks, allowing for a genuine and open exchange. This openness challenges any fixed notions and supports a genuinely non-positional stance.

5. Use of Inquiry Rather than Instruction

The coach utilizes questions and prompts that encourage deep self-inquiry, rather than providing direct answers or instructions, facilitating the client’s self-discovery and insight. Reflective questions prompt self-inquiry and introspection, reinforcing that the coach is not a higher authority but a facilitator of realization.

6. Encourage Joint Inquiry

Engage in joint inquiry where both coach and client explore questions together, fostering a shared journey of understanding and discovery. This method deeply aligns with the ultimate purpose of nondual teachings — to realize and embody the oneness and interconnectedness of all existence.

7. Regular Practice and Reflection

Both coach and client benefit from regular practices that reinforce nondual understanding, such as meditation or self-inquiry. These practices help ground the insights in direct experience rather than conceptual understanding, enhancing the effectiveness of the coaching process and making it a transformative experience for both coach and client.
